File too big for ChatGPT? Cut your CSV down to the rows you need first
You have a big CSV and a question about it, and the quickest route seems obvious: upload it to ChatGPT and ask. Then the upload fails, or it works and the answers are slow and vague, because the assistant is guessing its way through millions of rows.
Interest in this is huge. A YouTube video called “How I Tricked ChatGPT into Analyzing MASSIVE Datasets” has 1.19 million views. Its comments raise the other problem too: “But isn’t exposing your company data to ChatGPT a big issue?”
Both problems have the same fix. Cut the file down to the rows that answer your question before it goes anywhere near an AI. MegaCSV does that in your browser: open the big file, filter it, and export a small CSV that fits.
Key takeaways
- ChatGPT takes CSV files and spreadsheets up to about 50 MB, depending on row size, and free accounts can upload 3 files a day. Gemini takes files up to 100 MB and Claude up to 500 MB. A 5 GB export is far past all three.
- Smaller is better even under the limit: the assistant analyses a 50,000-row file faster and more reliably than a 5-million-row one.
- Open the file in MegaCSV, filter to what your question is about, and Export → CSV. The export keeps every value exactly as it was.
- Your big file is never uploaded by MegaCSV, and the AI sees only the rows you chose to give it.
AI upload limits for CSV files
Checked November 2026. These change often, so follow the links before you rely on them.
| Assistant | Limit for a CSV in a chat | Source |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | About 50 MB for CSV files and spreadsheets, depending on the size of each row; up to 80 files every 3 hours, and 3 uploads a day on the free plan | OpenAI: Uploading files and audio to ChatGPT |
| Gemini | 100 MB per file (videos up to 2 GB) | Gemini Apps Help: Upload & analyze files |
| Claude | 500 MB per file, up to 20 files per chat (30 MB per file in a project) | Claude Help Center: Uploading files |
At about 110 bytes a row, 50 MB is roughly 450,000 rows. Exports from finance systems, web analytics and CRMs are often millions.
Why a smaller file gets better answers
AI assistants analyse a CSV by writing and running code against it, inside a sandbox with limited time and memory. With a huge file:
- The upload can fail at the size limit, or partway through.
- The analysis can time out or run out of memory, and the assistant quietly works on a sample instead.
- The answer gets vaguer. “Roughly”, “it appears”, “based on the first rows”: the assistant is telling you it didn’t read everything.
A file that contains only the rows your question is about avoids all three. The assistant reads all of it, and you can check its answer against the file yourself.
How to cut a big CSV down for ChatGPT
- Open the file. Go to megacsv.com/app and drop the CSV on the page. It opens whatever its size; the first rows appear straight away. Your file is never uploaded.
- Decide what the question is about. “Why did refunds jump in October?” needs October’s refunds, not five years of orders.
- Filter to those rows. Choose Filter, then + Add condition, for example type is
refundand order_date starts with2026-10. Choose Apply filters; the status bar shows how many rows match. - Check the size. At about 110 bytes a row, 50 MB is about 450,000 rows. If you have far more, narrow the filter, or split the export (next step) and ask about one part at a time.
- Export. Choose Export → CSV. To split, pick A number I choose… under Split into files of and enter, say, 200,000 rows per file. Each file keeps the header row.
- Upload the small file to ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude and ask your question.
For a question like “how many refunds were there in October?”, you may not need the AI at all: the status bar shows the count of matching rows as soon as the filter finishes.
Before you upload company data
The AI only needs the rows that answer your question, and often not every column. Filtering first is also the simplest way to share less: leave out the customers, regions or years the question isn’t about. Check your company’s policy on AI tools before uploading anything confidential.
Frequently asked questions
What is the maximum CSV file size for ChatGPT?
OpenAI’s help page says CSV files and spreadsheets can be up to about 50 MB, depending on the size of each row (checked November 2026). Free accounts can upload 3 files a day.
How do I make a CSV file smaller for ChatGPT?
Open it in MegaCSV, filter it to the rows your question is about, and export a new CSV. Or split it into several smaller files with Split into files of → A number I choose….
Can ChatGPT analyse a file with millions of rows?
Sometimes, if the file is under the size limit, but it may time out or analyse only a sample. Filtering to the rows you need gives faster and more reliable answers.
Is it safe to upload my CSV to ChatGPT?
That depends on your company’s policy and your ChatGPT plan. MegaCSV never uploads your file, so filtering in MegaCSV first lets you share only the rows you choose.
